Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the questions we commonly receive.
What Exactly is Memory Care?
Memory care offers specialized support for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Because of the increasing number of people affected by Alzheimer’s and similar conditions, memory care has become the fastest-growing area of the senior housing market. Despite its name, the care it provides is not limited to memory-related issues. Dementia has other symptoms, such as wandering, difficulty communicating, impaired judgment, behavioral changes and more. The staff and aides at The Meadows are specially trained to manage these many symptoms with patience and respect.
What is the Difference Between Memory Care and a Nursing Home?
There is a common misconception that the term “nursing home” is an umbrella term for all senior living communities or retirement homes. This is untrue. Nursing home care is synonymous with skilled nursing: a service that provides around-the-clock care for people recovering from injuries or living with a chronic disease. Memory care, on the other hand, provides care for people with dementia and similar cognitive issues who are still able to live with a degree of independence (in a safe and secure setting like that provided by The Meadows).
Why is Memory Care Important?
Memory care allows those living with symptoms of dementia or memory-related issues to live their life with dignity, with full confidence that they can receive the care and support that matters most whenever they need it. People often take it upon themselves to care for a loved one in such a circumstance – and this is a noble undertaking. However, this can spread them too thin and ultimately do their loved one a disservice. What’s more, administering proper care to them requires a level of training and experience that many people simply do not have.
How Do You Pay for Memory Care?
Memory care is oftentimes much more affordable than people imagine. When they compare their daily expenses with the cost of memory care, they often find the costs quite similar. Some even find that memory care is the more affordable option. What’s more, there are plenty of options available to offset the costs. For example, Medicare and Medicaid do not typically cover residential senior care, but they can provide coverage for things like medication that can help reduce the cost of memory care. There are also opportunities such as veteran’s benefits and state assistance.
